question

I know they are making this course required, but i was wondering what everyone hopes to gain out of it. I know personally i just want to understand type, i want it to come easier to me, but i know that comes with practice and time. i also would really like it if as a class we communicated more. i think that maybe this laptop thing has hindered communication at the school. it was already bad because of our self-segregation of the floors, but i think it has gotten worst due to the fact everyone has their own stuff on their laptops. i would just like to hear some thoughts and some opinions (that is including but not limited to rex, brandon, jason, josh, and myself because we seem to be the only ones commenting/posting)

Good point, Naomi. I would partially agree with your interpretation of the laptop isolating us even further. I also know that it takes a while to "learn" how to work with a laptop, so we're all still on that curve.

As I was the "creator" of Type 3, I'll wait to see what other people have to say before I post my intentions of the course. What I will say, is that it's still early in the semester and we're all just getting our bearings.

Patience, Luke.

from my own personal experience, I had a really shitty type one class, i learned very little about typography, besides how easy it is to create distressed type. My type two class was a little better, but i don't think the projects i chose to do really taught me anything about type. They did nothing to break my comfort zone so to speak. Because of this, i feel like i'm really lacking in the typography department, and a lot of other people i've talked to agreed with me. We've learned more from trial and error, observation, and books than we have in classes. I'm hoping that this class gets me caught up so to speak.

As far as what I want out of this class, I just want to be a better designer overall and type is a big part of that. I really enjoy typography and after this class hope I can think of more unique and multidimensional ways to apply it.
As for the laptops, I agree that laptops have potential to be a source of isolation among students. I don't think any form of communication should prevail over the omni important and wonder of talking to people "in person". But it is up to the individual if they are going to make the effort. Life should be lived outside of the computer, which is just a tool to help with life, not consume it. Thats all I got.

Hey I post too punk. Besides that I would also like to add a note myself. I too believe that because we are more mobile it has torn apart some of our education. No longer held within the same confines we wonder off back to our own little world. Good call girl.

I feel as though type is one of my weak points as a designer. I'm personally trying to expand my idea of type as well as master the fundamentals.

I would really like to learn more about specifing type. It takes me so long to pick out the type for every project because I have not yet realized the mood each different font conveys. I would also typography in more interesting ways. I too realize that these things take time and practice.

I feel that type is something I can always improve and therefore the reason for me taking the class. I would also like to learn about places where I can find out more about specific type faces. I just want to learn.
